The Netherland Dwarf originated in the Netherlands in the early 20th century from small Polish rabbits crossed with wild rabbits, and at 0.5–1.1 kg it is one of the smallest domestic rabbit breeds. The round head, short ears and neotenic 'baby face' persist for life, and the breed commonly reaches 10–12 years. Despite the size, a Dwarf needs the same space as bigger rabbits — a large pen or free-roam room with hides and tunnels; small cages breed boredom and aggression in this quick, alert breed. They are more energetic and less cuddly than lops: expect a curious companion that explores on its own schedule and prefers all four feet on the ground. Feed unlimited grass hay, daily leafy greens and a strictly measured teaspoon-scale portion of pellets — dwarf breeds gain weight easily. Their shortened skull makes malocclusion the top health risk, so provide constant chew material and check the incisors monthly; annual dental checks with a rabbit-savvy vet are worth every shekel.
