The Shih Tzu was bred over centuries purely to be a beloved companion in Chinese palaces, and it still does that job beautifully: affectionate, friendly, playful and dignified, it wants little more than to be with its people. Its exercise needs are modest — short walks and indoor play — making it an excellent apartment and family dog, though its slightly stubborn streak means training rewards patience and consistency. It is sociable with everyone and happiest as a full-time lap companion. The long, flowing double coat is high-maintenance, needing daily brushing to prevent matting; many owners keep it in a short 'puppy cut' for ease, and the hair around the eyes and the beard need regular cleaning. As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, the Shih Tzu is sensitive to heat and can breathe hard, so keep it cool and avoid over-exertion. Its large eyes are prone to injury and dryness, and it can have eyelid problems (entropion), so protect and monitor them; also watch for patellar luxation, dental disease from a crowded mouth, and kidney issues. Keep it cool, groomed, lean and dentally healthy, and a Shih Tzu will be an affectionate, easygoing companion for ten to eighteen years.
