Argentine tegus grow large and need a genuinely room-sized enclosure — at least 2.4×1.2 m for an adult — with deep, humid substrate they can burrow into, a basking surface of 40–45°C, a cool retreat, strong UVB and a water tub big enough to climb into. They brumate in winter, slowing down and eating little for weeks, which is normal for a healthy animal. Tegus are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet: whole prey, insects, eggs and lean meats balanced with fruit and some vegetables, adjusted by age and season. Feed juveniles often and adults a few times a week, keeping an eye on weight because well-fed tegus readily become obese. This species is famous for intelligence and tolerance; with daily, patient interaction many tegus recognise their keepers, tolerate extensive handling and behave almost like a scaly dog. Support their considerable weight with both hands and respect that a startled tegu can bite or whip. Guard against obesity and fatty liver from overfeeding, metabolic bone disease without UVB or calcium, respiratory infection in cold damp housing, and kidney disease from dehydration.
