Painted turtles are active aquatic baskers that need a large filtered tank — around 150 L or more for an adult — with deep, clean water for swimming and a dry basking platform under a heat lamp and UVB. Keep water at 22–26°C and a basking spot of 30–32°C so they can dry off and warm up fully, which is essential for shell health. They are omnivores whose balance shifts with age: young turtles are more carnivorous, eating quality pellets, insects and worms, while adults take more aquatic plants and greens alongside protein. Feed juveniles daily and adults every other day, controlling portions to avoid obesity and to keep the water manageable. Painted turtles are hardy and engaging to watch but not handling pets; they may bite and stress when held, so enjoy them through the glass and interact at feeding time. Strong filtration and regular water changes are the backbone of their health, since most problems — shell rot, skin infections and respiratory illness — trace back to poor water quality, while metabolic bone disease follows insufficient UVB or calcium.
