Pyxicephalus adspersus, the African or pixie bullfrog, ranges across sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of the largest frogs, with dominant males reaching 20-24 cm and well over a kilogram, and it can live 15-25 years or more. Powerfully built and aggressive feeders, they will attempt to eat almost anything and can deliver a surprisingly hard bite, so they are a hands-off species. House one adult alone in a large, sturdy floor-space terrarium with deep moist substrate for burrowing, warmth of 25-30C, moderate humidity, and a shallow water area, kept scrupulously clean given their heavy waste output. Feed a varied diet of insects, worms, and occasional rodents, but avoid overfeeding, as obesity, impaction, and prolapse are common in captive bullfrogs. In the wild they aestivate underground through dry seasons. Their size, appetite, and attitude make them a spectacular but demanding pet suited to keepers who respect their power and long lifespan.
