Shaped by centuries of life on the rugged Welsh mountains, the Welsh Pony (which spans several sizes from the small Mountain Pony to the larger Cob) is hardy, sure-footed and famously beautiful, with an Arabian-like refinement and a bold, willing spirit. Its combination of good sense, athleticism and kindness makes it one of the most sought-after children's and performance ponies in the world. Intelligent and brave, Welsh ponies excel at showing, jumping, driving and pony club, and are forgiving enough for capable young riders while game enough to compete. They are people-friendly and thrive on regular work, turnout and consistent handling. Grooming the thick mane, tail and winter coat takes some effort, especially in the moult, and standard hoof, dental and vaccination care applies. Like most native ponies they are efficient easy keepers with a strong tendency to obesity and laminitis on rich grass, so grazing management is the single most important part of their care — keep them lean, worked and off lush spring pasture.
