The ackie, or ridge-tailed monitor, is a dwarf species from the arid rocky outcrops of northern and western Australia, reaching only 60-75 cm and living 15-20 years. Its short, spiny tail is used to wedge itself into rock crevices for protection. Highly active, curious, and intelligent, it offers much of the engaging behavior of large monitors in a far more practical package. House a single ackie in a large, secure enclosure of at least 120x60 cm with a very deep substrate for burrowing, stacked rocks or hides, and good floor space. Provide a hot, focused basking spot of 45-60 C using a cluster of bulbs over a rock pile, a strong UVB source, and low humidity with a slightly damp burrowing layer. Feed a lean, insect-heavy carnivorous diet of gut-loaded roaches, crickets, and worms, with occasional pinkies, avoiding overfeeding to prevent obesity. Frequent gentle interaction produces confident, tame animals.
