The red tegu is native to the dry forests and scrub of western Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia, reaching up to 1.4 m and 3-8 kg, with old males the heaviest. It lives 15-20 years and develops striking red coloration with maturity, intensifying in adult males. Sharing the tegu family's notable intelligence, it often becomes calm and interactive, recognizing its keeper and tolerating handling well. An adult needs a large ground-level enclosure of at least 240x120 cm with deep substrate for digging, a spacious water container, and secure hides. Provide a basking hot spot of 40-45 C, strong UVB, and humidity around 60-70%, with a seasonal cool-down for brumation. Feed a varied omnivorous diet of whole prey, insects, eggs, lean meats, and a portion of fruit, controlling quantity to avoid obesity.
