The Nile monitor is one of Africa's largest lizards, ranging along rivers and wetlands across much of the continent and reaching 1.5-2 m or more with substantial weight, living 10-20 years. It is a strong swimmer with a keeled, oar-like tail and formidable claws and jaws. Intelligent but frequently high-strung and defensive, it demands serious housing, respect, and experience, and is unsuitable for beginners. An adult requires a custom, room-sized enclosure with a very large, deep water body for swimming, robust basking areas, and secure construction to contain a powerful animal. Provide a hot basking spot of 45-55 C, strong UVB, and high humidity of 60-80% befitting its wetland home. Feed a carnivorous diet of whole prey, fish, and insects, managing portions to prevent obesity. Handling is challenging and often not advisable; these are primarily display animals for dedicated advanced keepers.
