Savannah monitors are large, intelligent, digging lizards that need a big, robust enclosure — at least 2.4×1.2 m of floor for an adult — filled with 30–60 cm of holding substrate they can burrow into. Provide a very hot basking surface of 45–55°C, a cool retreat, strong UVB and a water tub big enough to soak in; the deep, warm, humid burrow layer is what keeps them healthy. Diet is the single hardest thing to get right. In the wild they eat insects and other invertebrates, so captive animals should be fed mainly insects — roaches, crickets, snails — with only occasional lean whole prey, never a rodent-heavy diet. Overfeeding fatty rodents produces the grossly obese, short-lived savannahs that give the species its poor reputation. With daily calm interaction many savannahs become tolerant and even dog-like, but they are strong and can bite, whip or scratch, so build trust patiently and support the whole body. The dominant health problems are obesity and fatty liver from poor diet, plus metabolic bone disease without UVB or calcium, respiratory infection in cold damp cages, and kidney disease from dehydration and excess protein.
