The black moor is a fancy goldfish (Carassius auratus) developed in East Asia, distinguished by its deep velvety-black colour and prominent protruding 'telescope' eyes. It reaches about 10–20 cm and lives 10–15 years. The bulging eyes give it notably poor vision, which shapes almost every aspect of its care. A black moor needs at least 75 litres per fish with strong filtration, kept at 18–24°C with a pH of 6.5–7.5. Because it sees poorly and its eyes are delicate, the tank must be free of sharp rocks or decor that could injure them, and tankmates should be slow and gentle rather than fast competitors that outcompete it for food. It is an omnivore fed sinking pellet or gel food with blanched vegetables; food should be easy to find given its weak eyesight. Peaceful and best kept with other slow fancy goldfish, it is vulnerable to eye injuries and infections, swim-bladder problems and ich. A smooth, hazard-free tank, gentle companions and clean, stable water keep this gentle fish safe and healthy.
