The oranda is a fancy variety of goldfish (Carassius auratus), developed in East Asia through centuries of selective breeding. It has a rounded, egg-shaped body and a distinctive fleshy head-growth called a 'wen,' and reaches about 15–20 cm, living 10–15 years or more. Like all goldfish it is a cool-water fish, not tropical. A single oranda needs at least 75–115 litres, with extra volume per additional fish and strong filtration to handle heavy waste. Keep the water at 18–24°C with a pH of 6.5–7.5 and gentle flow. Avoid sharp decor, as the delicate wen is easily scratched and can become infected; smooth stones and robust plants are safest. Orandas are omnivores best fed a sinking gel or pellet food with blanched vegetables to prevent digestive and swim-bladder trouble common in round-bodied fancies. Slow, peaceful swimmers, they should share space only with other gentle fancy goldfish, not fast fin-nippers. Their main risks are swim-bladder disorders, wen infections and ich; clean, stable water and a sinking, varied diet keep them healthy.
