The ryukin is a fancy goldfish (Carassius auratus) developed in Japan, named after the Ryukyu Islands through which it was introduced. It is distinguished by a deep, rounded body and a pronounced hump behind the head, and reaches about 15–20 cm, occasionally 25 cm, living 10–15 years. It is a cool-water fish requiring no heater. A ryukin needs at least 75 litres, with additional volume per fish and strong filtration for its heavy waste. Keep the water at 18–24°C with a pH of 7.0–8.0 and gentle flow. Smooth substrate and hardy plants suit it best, and it is one of the hardier fancy varieties, tolerating a slightly wider range of conditions. Ryukins are omnivores fed a sinking pellet or gel food with blanched vegetables like peas and spinach. Their deep body makes them somewhat prone to swim-bladder problems, so sinking food and not overfeeding are important. Peaceful and social, they mix well with other fancy goldfish; their main risks are swim-bladder disorders and ich, both managed with clean, stable water and a careful diet.
