Panda corydoras are small, endearing armored catfish that must be kept in groups of six or more to thrive, as they are intensely social and grow stressed and withdrawn in isolation. They prefer cooler water than many tropicals, around 68-77F, and absolutely require a soft sand substrate to protect the delicate barbels they use to root for food; sharp gravel wears these down and invites infection. Constantly foraging, they eagerly accept sinking pellets, wafers, and frozen foods like bloodworms and daphnia, though they still need dedicated feeding rather than relying on scraps. Peaceful and compatible with virtually any calm community fish, they add cheerful activity to the lower levels of the tank. Watch for the charming darting to the surface to gulp air, a normal behavior, and provide well-oxygenated, clean water to keep these long-lived little catfish healthy for a decade or more.
