Otocinclus, affectionately called otos, are tiny, peaceful algae-grazing catfish that are indispensable in planted aquariums for their ability to clean soft green and brown algae from leaves and glass without damaging plants. They must be kept in groups of six or more and are only suitable for mature, established tanks, because they depend on a steady supply of natural biofilm and algae to survive the sensitive settling-in period. Many otos are lost shortly after purchase due to starvation and the stress of wild collection, so acclimate them slowly to a well-aged tank and offer supplemental blanched vegetables and algae wafers to ensure they never run out of food. They need clean, well-oxygenated, stable water around 72-79F and gentle tankmates. Once established, these industrious little catfish are hardy, active grazers that quietly keep a planted aquarium immaculate for years.
