The crested gecko is arguably the easiest gecko to keep, because it thrives at normal room temperatures (around 22–26°C) and needs no special heating or, in most homes, UVB. As an arboreal, tropical species it wants a tall, planted enclosure with plenty of branches and foliage to climb and hide in, and moderate humidity of around 60–80% maintained by a daily light misting that it also drinks from. Best of all, feeding is simple and complete: a good-quality powdered crested gecko diet, mixed with water into a fruit-smoothie paste, provides everything it needs, with the occasional gut-loaded insect as a treat. This removes the calcium-balancing guesswork that trips people up with other reptiles, though the diet still supplies the calcium that prevents metabolic bone disease. Handle gently and low over a soft surface — cresteds are jumpy and, once they drop their tail, it does not grow back. Keep the enclosure clean and humidity correct to avoid stuck shed and dehydration, avoid temperatures above the high 20s°C which stress them, and a crested gecko will be a fascinating, low-effort companion for fifteen to twenty years.
