Also from New Caledonia, the gargoyle gecko reaches about 20-25 cm and lives 15-20 years, closely paralleling its crested-gecko cousin but tolerating a slightly wider range and even regrowing a dropped tail. It is a robust, forgiving arboreal species that has become a hobby staple. Adults can be mildly territorial, so they are kept individually. Provide a tall 45x45x60 cm planted terrarium with cork bark, branches, and foliage for climbing and cover. Comfortable temperatures sit at 22-27 C with a modest gradient; low-level UVB is optional but helpful. Mist to maintain 50-70% humidity with nightly drying. Feed a complete powdered crested/gargoyle diet as the staple, plus dusted crickets or roaches once or twice weekly; adults may also take the occasional pink mouse. Handle calmly and support the body.
