Endemic to New Caledonia, the leachianus or giant gecko reaches 30-43 cm and is remarkably long-lived, often surpassing 20-30 years. Its lichen-and-bark coloration renders it nearly invisible against tree trunks, and different island locales vary in size and pattern. Adults can be territorial and vocal, and some individuals are nippy, though many become tolerant with routine. House a single adult in a tall, sturdy 60x45x90 cm planted terrarium with thick cork tubes and branches for climbing and hiding. Keep cooler arboreal temperatures of 22-27 C, avoiding sustained heat above 29 C, with a nighttime drop and optional low UVB. Maintain 60-75% humidity via misting with good airflow. Feed a complete powdered crested-gecko diet as the base, supplemented with dusted insects and, for adults, occasional pink mice. Handle sparingly and let the animal grip your hand rather than restraining it.
