Found across coastal Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands, the mourning gecko is a diminutive 8-10 cm species living about 5-10 years. Its most remarkable trait is parthenogenesis: populations are entirely female and clone themselves, so colonies grow readily and animals communicate with soft chirps. This makes it an easy, engaging community terrarium species. Keep a small colony in a planted 30x30x30 cm bioactive terrarium with cork bark, branches, and dense foliage for cover and egg-laying. Provide gentle warmth of 24-28 C and low-level UVB, which benefits these partly diurnal geckos. Mist to maintain 60-80% humidity with drying periods. Feed a powdered crested-gecko diet plus tiny dusted insects such as fruit flies and micro-crickets. They are too small and fast for handling but fascinating to watch as a group.
