The leopard gecko is the classic beginner reptile — hardy, long-lived and genuinely tolerant of gentle handling — but 'easy' still means getting the basics right. As a ground-dwelling desert animal it needs a warm side around 30–32°C provided by belly heat over a thermostat, a cooler side, and at least three hides: a warm one, a cool one, and a humid 'moist hide' filled with damp moss that is essential for clean shedding. Diet is live insects — crickets, dubia roaches, the occasional mealworm — gut-loaded and, crucially, dusted with calcium and vitamin D3. Skipping this supplement is the single most common cause of metabolic bone disease, the crippling deformity that is the leading killer of pet geckos. The fat stored in the tail is a live health gauge: a plump tail means a well-fed gecko, a thin one is a warning. Avoid loose sand with young geckos, which can cause fatal gut impaction, and watch for stuck shed on the toes and eyes, which the humid hide prevents. Keep the enclosure clean, provide fresh water, supplement every feeding, and a leopard gecko will thrive calmly for fifteen to twenty years.
