The Dexter originated in southwestern Ireland and is one of the smallest European cattle breeds, developed by mountain smallholders as an efficient dual-purpose animal for both milk and beef. Standing 92-112 cm at the shoulder and weighing 270-450 kg, Dexters live 12-20 years and are prized for their hardiness, foraging efficiency, and docile disposition. Dexters do well on modest acreage, converting grass and hay into milk and meat with little supplemental feed. They need secure fencing, a dry shelter or windbreak, and the company of other cattle.
