The Domino Damselfish, or three-spot dascyllus (Dascyllus trimaculatus), is an Indo-Pacific species including the Red Sea, reaching about 12 to 14 cm. Juveniles are jet black with three brilliant white spots, and shelter among anemones and urchins. The spots fade with maturity and adults turn a plain sooty grey-black, which surprises many owners who bought the juvenile for its markings. It is exceptionally hardy, tolerates 24-27C, salinity 1.023-1.026 and pH 8.1-8.4, and eats anything offered. That toughness is exactly why it was once sold as a tank-cycling fish, a practice to avoid. The real issue is temperament: adults are among the most aggressive fish commonly sold for reef tanks and will claim a large territory, harass tankmates and become nearly impossible to catch out of established rockwork. Keep it only in a 200 litre or larger tank with robust companions such as tangs or larger wrasses, and decide on it as a permanent choice rather than a starter fish.
