"Dwarf hamster" covers several small species — Campbell's, Winter White (Djungarian) and their hybrids — from the steppes of Central Asia and Siberia. At 5–10 cm and 20–50 grams they are faster, twitchier and more nocturnal than Syrians, and live 1.5–3 years. Unlike Syrians some can, with luck, live in same-sex sibling pairs raised together, but be ready to separate permanently at the first blood. The housing rule is identical and often ignored: a large single floor of 80×50 cm or more, deep burrowing substrate, a solid 20 cm wheel and a sand bath. Their speed makes them poor handling pets and superb watching pets — tame them by letting them run over still hands inside a deep box rather than by grabbing. Dwarf hamsters are strongly prone to diabetes, so the diet must be low-sugar: a quality dwarf mix, protein treats, herbs and leafy greens, and essentially no fruit. Winter Whites famously moult to a paler coat as daylight shortens. Watch for diabetes signs (excess drinking and urinating), dental overgrowth and the same wet-tail risk in stressed youngsters.
