The Syrian (or golden) hamster was carried out of a single Aleppo burrow in 1930 — nearly every pet Syrian alive descends from that one litter. Solitary by deep instinct, a Syrian must live completely alone: two adults sharing a cage will fight, often fatally. Adults reach 13–18 cm and live 2–3 years. Give far more space than pet-shop cages suggest — a 100×50 cm continuous floor is the modern welfare minimum — with 20+ cm of paper or aspen bedding for the burrowing that is their strongest natural behavior, a large 20 cm+ solid wheel (mesh wheels break legs), and a sand bath for coat care. They are crepuscular: never wake a sleeping hamster, and let them come to a still, cupped hand in the evening. Feed a varied seed-and-pellet hamster mix with occasional protein (a mealworm, a little cooked egg) and small vegetable pieces; the ever-full cheek pouches mean they hoard, so scatter-feeding is better than a bowl. Watch for wet tail (a serious diarrheal illness in stressed young hamsters), overgrown incisors, and obesity — and skip the plastic ball, which stresses them more than it exercises them.
