Also called the Djungarian or Siberian hamster, the Winter White hails from the steppes of Kazakhstan and Siberia, where its seasonal colour change camouflages it against snow. These stocky dwarves measure 7-9 cm, weigh 30-50 grams, and typically live one to two years. They tend to be calmer and more handleable than Roborovskis when tamed gently from a young age. Provide a spacious tank-style enclosure with deep bedding for burrowing, a solid wheel, and sand bath. Same-sex pairs raised together can sometimes cohabit, but watch closely for bullying and be ready to separate. Feed a dwarf-appropriate seed mix low in sugar, as the species is highly prone to diabetes, plus small amounts of fresh greens and occasional protein. Keep the environment away from bright constant light so their natural day-length cues stay intact.
