Originating in the deserts of Mongolia and northern China, the Roborovski hamster is the tiniest domesticated hamster at just 4-5 cm long and around 20-25 grams. With a lifespan reaching three years or more, "Robos" are hardy but famously skittish and rarely sit still to be held, making them better as watch-and-enjoy pets than cuddle companions. Because they are so small and quick, provide a secure glass or acrylic tank with a tight lid, deep sandy bedding for digging, a sand bath for grooming, and a small-diameter wheel. They can sometimes be kept in same-sex pairs or small groups if introduced young and given ample space, though solitary housing avoids all conflict. Feed a fine dwarf-hamster seed mix with millet, occasional mealworms, and tiny portions of vegetables; monitor sugary treats closely as dwarves are prone to diabetes.
