The Elf Cat is a Sphynx crossed with an American Curl, first bred in the United States in 2006 to combine hairlessness with the Curl's backward-curving ears. It is an experimental breed, registered with a small number of associations rather than CFA or TICA championship. Personality is pure Sphynx: extroverted, clownish, endlessly attention-seeking, following people around and insisting on sleeping under the covers. A hairless cat is a higher-maintenance animal than its bare skin suggests. Skin oils that a coat would normally absorb build up instead, so the cat needs a gentle bath every one to two weeks and its skin folds wiped between baths, or it develops blackheads and yeasty skin infections. The same applies to the ears, which produce a lot of wax and, in this breed, are curled in a way that traps it, so weekly ear cleaning is part of the routine. Nail beds also need wiping. Temperature matters constantly. Elf cats lose heat fast, must live strictly indoors, need warm bedding and often jumpers in winter, and can sunburn through a window in summer. On health, choose a breeder who echocardiogram-screens for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is well documented in Sphynx lines, and ask about HCM in the parents specifically. Feed generously, since these cats burn calories keeping warm, and keep up dental care, another Sphynx weak point.
