The Exotic Shorthair is a Persian in a short, plush coat — same sweet, flat face and calm, gentle temperament, but without the hours of daily brushing. It is a quiet, affectionate lap cat that loves serene surroundings and undemanding company, with occasional bursts of kittenish play, and it makes an easy fit for apartments and calm homes. The short coat only needs a weekly brush, but the flat face carries the same responsibilities as the Persian's: the eyes tear and must be wiped clean daily to prevent staining and infection. Being brachycephalic, the Exotic is intolerant of heat and can breathe noisily, so keep it strictly indoors, cool and unstressed. Buy only from breeders who screen for polycystic kidney disease, which runs in the Persian family, and be alert to the breathing, dental-crowding and eye problems that come with the short muzzle. With daily eye care, lifelong kidney monitoring, a good dental routine and a cool indoor life, most Exotics stay comfortable and content well into their teens.
