One of the oldest of the rex breeds, the German Rex traces to a curly-coated stray found near Berlin in the 1940s. The result is an affectionate, even-tempered cat that adores human company and slots easily into family life, getting along with children, dogs and other cats. German Rexes are lively but gentle, keen on interactive play, gentle wrestling and following their people about. They are clever enough to enjoy learning simple tricks, and their sociable streak means they should not be left alone for long stretches. The short, wavy coat produces little shedding and needs only light hand-grooming; over-brushing can damage the delicate curls. Because the skin can become oily, an occasional wipe-down or bath helps, and ears may need regular cleaning. Watch for skin sensitivity and the patellar issues seen in some lines, and keep up routine dental care.
