The Foldex, sometimes called the Exotic Fold, was developed in Quebec from 1992 by crossing the Scottish Fold with the Exotic Shorthair, and is recognised by the Canadian Cat Association. The result is an exceptionally round cat: round head, round eyes, round body, with small ears folded flat forward. Temperamentally it is one of the easiest cats in this file, calm, gentle, patient with children and content to be a quiet companion rather than an athlete. Anyone considering a folded-ear cat needs the full picture first, because it is a welfare issue and not a cosmetic one. The fold is caused by a dominant mutation in cartilage, and that same mutation affects cartilage throughout the body. All folded cats carry some degree of osteochondrodysplasia, a developmental joint and bone disease that causes stiffness, a thickened inflexible tail, reluctance to jump and painful arthritis, sometimes from a young age. Two folded cats must never be bred together, since homozygous kittens are severely crippled. Several veterinary bodies oppose breeding folded cats at all. If you have one, the practical priorities are joint-focused. Keep the cat strictly lean, since every extra hundred grams loads damaged joints; provide steps or ramps instead of jumps and soft bedding; check the tail for stiffness at each vet visit; and discuss pain management with your vet early rather than waiting for obvious lameness. The short plush coat needs brushing twice a week, and the flatter face means eyes should be wiped clean regularly.
