The Gold Barb (Barbodes semifasciolatus) comes from southern China and Vietnam and reaches about 6 to 7 cm. The wild fish is green-bronze; the gold form widely sold, sometimes labelled Schuberti, is a captive-bred colour line of the same species rather than a separate fish. Both carry a row of dark blotches along the lower flank. A group of six or more needs 100 litres or more at 18-26C, pH 6.0 to 8.0, tolerating a wide range including unheated rooms in a mild climate. Feed flake, pellets and frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp, with some vegetable content. It is one of the calmer barbs, far less inclined to nip than a tiger barb, and it suits a general community with platies, corydoras, danios and larger tetras. It grazes soft algae and will nibble very delicate plants, but it leaves robust species alone. Keep the group at six or more, and its natural behaviour, a loose busy shoal working the middle and lower water, comes out properly.
