The Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya) comes from Myanmar and reaches about 5 to 6 cm. Its odd name comes from the aquarium trade rather than its origin, as it first appeared in fish markets in Odessa before its wild population was properly described. Males wear a broad red band along the flank with black-speckled scales; females are plain silver with a dark shoulder spot. A group of eight or more needs 100 litres or more at 18-26C, pH 6.5 to 7.8, with planting at the sides and open swimming lanes. Feed flake, micro pellets and frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp, plus some vegetable content. It is hardy, tolerates cooler rooms and is one of the better barbs for a community, though like most Pethia it can nip if kept in small numbers, so eight or more is the sensible minimum and long-finned tankmates are best avoided. Male colour is at its strongest when several males compete, so a group with a few males and more females gives the best display.
