The rosy barb (Pethia conchonius) is a hardy, active cyprinid from the subtropical rivers and lakes of South Asia, especially northern India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It grows to about 8–14 cm and lives 5–8 years. Breeding males develop a brilliant rosy-red flush, while females stay a coppery silver. Rosy barbs are strong, fast swimmers that need a tank of 110 litres or more with plenty of length, kept in a group of six or more. They tolerate cooler water than most tropicals, thriving at 18–24°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5, which makes them suitable for unheated rooms. Provide robust plants and open swimming space, as their energy can overwhelm a small tank. They are hardy omnivores that eat flake, pellets, vegetables and frozen or live foods. Active and generally peaceful, they can nip the fins of slow or long-finned fish if under-schooled, so keep a good-sized group and choose brisk tankmates. Their few problems — ich and fin rot — follow poor water or overheating and are prevented by cool, clean, stable conditions.
