The Kurilian Bobtail evolved on the harsh Kuril islands and carries a hardy, self-assured temperament to match. It is affectionate and dog-like with its own people, gets along with children and other pets, and each short, kinked tail is as unique as a fingerprint. These are natural athletes and skilled fishers who love water, jumping and problem-solving. Provide climbing space, sturdy toys and games that tap their hunting instinct; many will play fetch for hours and enjoy exploring a secure garden or a harness walk. The semi-long coat is weather-resistant and only needs brushing once or twice a week, more during seasonal moults. The breed is remarkably robust with no signature genetic disease, so routine care — dental checks, weight control and clean litter to protect the urinary tract — keeps most Kurilians thriving well into their late teens.
