The Manx is the famous tailless cat of the Isle of Man, a sturdy, powerful-hindquartered hunter with a loyal, playful, almost dog-like personality — many fetch, follow their owners and enjoy learning tricks. Intelligent and adaptable, it bonds closely with its family and does well in active households, and its strong back legs make it a formidable jumper. The tailless look comes from the Manx gene, and this is the one thing to understand before adopting: the same gene can cause 'Manx syndrome', a spectrum of spinal and nerve defects that in serious cases affects the bladder, bowel and hind-leg function. Responsible breeders never pair two tailless cats and let kittens mature before placing them, which greatly reduces the risk — so buy carefully and ask about the line's health. Beyond the spinal concern, keep an eye on urinary and bowel health, watch weight, and provide the double coat with a weekly brush (more in the shedding seasons). A well-bred Manx from a careful breeder is a robust, engaging and long-lived companion.
