The Ocicat looks like a small wild spotted cat but has no wild blood at all — it was created from Abyssinian, Siamese and American Shorthair lines and is thoroughly domestic in temperament. In fact it is one of the most dog-like of cats: outgoing, confident, highly trainable and devoted, it learns to walk on a leash, come when called, play fetch and even do tricks, and it greets strangers as friends rather than hiding. All that sociability means the Ocicat wants company and does not do well left alone for long days; a second pet or an engaged household keeps it happy. Give it climbing space, puzzle feeders and daily interactive play to satisfy its active mind. The short, spotted coat is beautifully easy — an occasional brush is plenty. From its Abyssinian and Siamese heritage the breed can inherit progressive retinal atrophy, pyruvate kinase deficiency, renal amyloidosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, so buy from a breeder who DNA-tests and screens hearts. Keep up dental care, monitor kidney health as it ages, and keep the cat lean and mentally engaged.
