The Munchkin is defined by its short legs, the result of a natural dominant gene, and it packs a big, playful, sociable personality into a low-slung body. Curious and outgoing, it corners at speed, sits up like a meerkat to survey the room, and famously collects small shiny objects to stash away. It bonds warmly with families and gets along with children and other pets, staying kitten-like and playful throughout life. The short legs limit high jumping but not much else — Munchkins run and play normally — though you should provide steps or ramps to favourite perches and keep them at a lean weight to spare their joints and spine. Coat care depends on length: weekly brushing for shorthairs, a couple of times a week for longhairs. Because the leg gene is lethal when doubled, ethical breeders never pair two Munchkins, and they should screen for the spinal (lordosis) and chest (pectus excavatum) issues seen in some lines. Buy carefully, keep the cat slim, provide easy access to its favourite spots, and maintain routine dental, urinary and weight care.
