The Russian Blue is a quiet, gentle and deeply loyal cat that reserves its affection for a trusted few. It is often shy with strangers and will vanish when guests arrive, but with its own people it is playful, devoted and pleasantly undemanding. Sensitive to change, it likes a predictable routine and calm surroundings, which makes it a wonderful companion for a quiet home rather than a chaotic one. The short, dense double coat with its silver-tipped sheen is easy to care for — a weekly brush keeps it gleaming. Russian Blues are notably food-motivated and will beg convincingly, so the main day-to-day discipline is measured portions and interactive play to prevent the obesity the breed slides into easily. This is one of the healthier, longer-lived pedigree cats with no dramatic breed-specific disease, but the usual feline care still applies: keep it slim, maintain good dental hygiene, provide plenty of fresh water for urinary and kidney health, and keep annual check-ups. Respect its dislike of upheaval and it will reward you with fifteen to twenty years of steady, elegant company.
