The Savannah is a wild-looking hybrid that bonds fiercely with its family, greets visitors at the door and often learns its own name. These are confident, demanding cats that suit an experienced owner with plenty of vertical space rather than a quiet, hands-off household. Boredom is a Savannah's worst enemy. They leap two metres from a standstill, open cupboards, fetch tirelessly and adore running water, so a tall cat tree, puzzle feeders, a secure catio and daily interactive play are essential. Many happily walk on a harness and enjoy clicker tricks. The short spotted coat needs only a weekly once-over and an occasional nail trim. Savannahs are generally robust, but responsible breeders screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and the breed can react to some anaesthetics, so choose a feline-savvy vet and keep dental care and vaccinations on schedule.
