The Montezuma Swordtail (Xiphophorus montezumae) comes from the Rio Panuco system in north-eastern Mexico and reaches about 6 to 7 cm of body length, with the male's caudal extension often equalling or exceeding that again. It is a wild-type species rather than a colour-bred variety, patterned in olive and brown with a zigzag lateral line, and males take a long time to develop the full sword. A group of one male with several females needs 100 litres or more at 20-26C in hard alkaline water at pH 7.2 to 8.2, with good flow and high oxygen, reflecting its origin in cool, fast streams. Feed a quality flake or pellet with vegetable content plus frozen daphnia and brine shrimp. It is peaceful with other species, though males compete with each other and need either space or a single-male setup. Because the sword is long and delicate, a long tank and calm tankmates matter. It breeds more slowly and in smaller numbers than a common swordtail, which makes it a rewarding species for a keeper who wants to maintain a line rather than manage an overflow.
