The platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a small livebearer native to the warm fresh waters of the east coast of Central America, from Mexico through Guatemala and Honduras. It grows to about 4–6 cm and lives 3–4 years. Selective breeding has produced its famous sunset, wagtail and Mickey Mouse colour patterns. Platies are easygoing community fish for a tank of 40 litres or more, kept at 22–26°C with a neutral-to-hard pH of 7.0–8.2. They enjoy planted tanks with open swimming space and prefer to be in small mixed-sex groups. Like all livebearers they appreciate slightly harder, mineral-rich water. They are unfussy omnivores that eat flake, micro-pellets, and enjoy vegetable supplements and small live or frozen treats. Peaceful and prolific, they cross-breed readily with swordtails and quickly produce fry. Hardy by nature, their few problems — ich, fin rot and swim-bladder issues — almost always follow overfeeding or poor water, both easily avoided.
