The swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a livebearer from the fast, vegetated streams and rivers of Central America, from Mexico through Guatemala to Honduras. Males, whose lower tail extends into a long 'sword,' reach about 14 cm including the sword, while females grow slightly larger; both live 3–5 years. They are close relatives of the platy and readily hybridise with it. Swordtails are active swimmers needing a tank of 75 litres or more with a secure lid, since they jump. Keep them at 22–28°C with a hard, alkaline pH of 7.0–8.4, and provide open swimming space with plants around the edges. House one male with several females, as rival males can be pushy and chase. They are unfussy omnivores that eat flake, pellets and vegetable matter, grazing on algae throughout the day. Peaceful with most community fish, dominant males may harass smaller tankmates. Hardy overall, their occasional troubles — ich, fin rot and swim-bladder problems — nearly always follow poor water or overfeeding and are prevented by clean, hard water and a varied diet.
