The Humpbacked Limia (Limia nigrofasciata) is endemic to Lake Miragoane in Haiti and reaches about 4 to 6 cm, females slightly larger. Young males look ordinary; with age they develop a distinctly arched back, a deepened body and a tall dorsal fin, so an old male looks quite different from a young one. The species is restricted to a single lake in the wild and, like several Caribbean limias, depends partly on hobbyist populations. A group of six or more suits a 60 litre tank or larger at 23-28C in hard alkaline water at pH 7.2 to 8.2, with planting and some open space. Feed a spirulina-based flake or pellet with vegetable content plus frozen daphnia and brine shrimp, since much of its natural diet is algae and plant material. It is peaceful, undemanding and slower to breed than a guppy, producing modest broods every few weeks, which makes it far easier to manage. It suits a hard-water community with platies, corydoras and small rasboras, and it is a good species for anyone wanting a livebearer that is not sold in every shop.
