The guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is native to the fresh and brackish waters of northeastern South America — Venezuela, Guyana, Trinidad and the Antilles — and has since been introduced worldwide. Males are tiny at around 3 cm while females reach 6 cm, and they live a fast 2–3 years. As livebearers they give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. A trio or small group suits a planted tank of 40 litres or more, kept at 22–28°C with a pH of 6.8–7.8. Guppies appreciate slightly hard, mineral-rich water and gentle filtration, plus floating plants where fry can hide from hungry adults. Keep more females than males to spread out male attention. Guppies are easy omnivores that relish quality flake, micro-pellets and occasional live or frozen brine shrimp and daphnia. They breed so readily that a mixed group quickly multiplies, so plan for the surplus. Watch for fin rot, ich and fungal skin issues, all usually triggered by poor water or chilling and prevented by steady temperature and regular water changes.
