The Butterfly Goodeid (Ameca splendens) comes from a very small area of the Ameca river system in Jalisco, Mexico, and reaches about 6 to 8 cm, females larger. Its wild habitat was reduced to almost nothing and the species has spent long periods considered extinct in the wild, with the aquarium population maintained by hobbyist breeders. Goodeids differ from guppies and platies in nourishing their young internally through structures called trophotaeniae, more like a mammalian placenta than a yolk sac. A group needs 100 litres or more at 20-26C, cooler than typical tropicals, in hard alkaline water at pH 7.2 to 8.2, with good flow, oxygen and open swimming space. Feed a spirulina-rich flake or pellet with vegetable content plus frozen daphnia and brine shrimp, as it is largely herbivorous. It is hardy and easy, but it is also a nipper that will pull at long fins, so avoid guppies and bettas. Anyone with space is doing something genuinely useful by keeping and breeding a group of these.
