Endler's livebearer (Poecilia wingei) is a close relative of the guppy, discovered in the coastal Laguna de Patos and nearby waters of Cumaná in northeastern Venezuela. Males are tiny at around 2.5 cm and females about 4 cm, and they live 2–3 years. Pure wild-type Endlers are now rare, and most aquarium stock is line-bred or guppy-crossed. A colony flourishes in a planted tank of 20–40 litres at 24–28°C with a hard, alkaline pH of 7.0–8.5. Like guppies they prefer mineral-rich water and gentle filtration, with floating plants and fine-leaved cover for the fry. They are peaceful and best kept in groups with more females than males. Endlers are micro-omnivores that take crushed flake, micro-pellets and tiny live foods like baby brine shrimp. They breed even more readily than guppies, so a mixed colony expands fast. Robust and forgiving, they occasionally suffer ich or fin rot from chilling or poor water, both prevented by warmth, cleanliness and stable parameters.
