The powder orange is a popular captive-bred colour morph of Porcellionides pruinosus, a small, quick isopod found across much of the world. Individuals reach barely 1 cm and live one to two years, but their claim to fame is speed: they breed and mature faster than most species, establishing a thriving colony within weeks. This makes them a favourite starter isopod and terrarium cleanup crew. House a colony in a ventilated container with moist substrate, plenty of leaf litter and rotting wood, and a cuttlebone for calcium, at room temperature 20-26C. They tolerate slightly drier, better-ventilated conditions than many isopods and dislike stagnant dampness. Supplement decaying leaves with vegetables and periodic protein such as fish flakes. Fast-moving and skittish, they are not a handling pet but need essentially no maintenance beyond misting and feeding. Their rapid reproduction makes them excellent live food culture as well as bioactive workers.
