Geosesarma dennerle is a small semi-terrestrial crab from the forest streams of Java, Indonesia, growing to only about 2.5 cm across the legs. These colourful crabs live roughly two to three years and, unlike many crabs, breed in freshwater without a marine larval stage, so small colonies can be sustained in captivity. Their striking colours and modest size make them ideal paludarium residents. Set up a paludarium that is mostly land with a shallow, filtered freshwater section they can enter, dense with plants, cork bark, and hiding places, kept humid at 24-28C. They are largely terrestrial and do not need salt water. Feed an omnivorous diet of insects, prepared crab or fish foods, and blanched vegetables, with calcium for molting. Provide plenty of cover, since crabs are vulnerable and reclusive just after molting. Generally peaceful in groups given space, they are a display animal rather than a handling pet.
