The Siamese is one of the most social and vocal of all cats — a loud, opinionated companion that follows you everywhere, converses in a distinctive raspy voice and forms an intense one-on-one bond. That devotion has a flip side: Siamese hate being alone and can grow anxious or destructive if left for long days, so they do best with company, whether a person who is often home or a second cat to talk to. Highly intelligent and busy, they need real mental work — puzzle feeders, fetch, clicker tricks, tall perches and rotating toys — or they will invent their own entertainment. The short, fine coat is almost maintenance-free with an occasional wipe, and the pointed pattern darkens as the cat ages or lives somewhere cool. The breed is long-lived but carries some specific risks: a tendency toward respiratory and dental problems, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, amyloidosis and a higher rate of certain cancers such as mediastinal lymphoma. Buy from a breeder who screens their lines, mention the breed's known anesthetic sensitivity to your vet, and keep up annual dental and cardiac checks.
