The Tonkinese blends its Siamese and Burmese ancestry into a beautifully balanced middle ground: social and talkative but softer-voiced than a Siamese, active and playful but happy to curl up and cuddle. It is a confident, people-loving extrovert that greets visitors, rides on shoulders and wants to be in the thick of family life — and like both parent breeds, it dislikes being left alone, so a companion cat or a busy home suits it well. Engage a Tonk daily with interactive toys, puzzle feeders and climbing space, and it will reward you with affectionate, entertaining company. The short, close, satiny coat is very low-maintenance, needing little more than an occasional wipe. Generally a healthy, sturdy breed, the Tonkinese shares a few risks with its ancestors — dental disease and gingivitis, occasional respiratory and urinary issues, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy — so buy from a breeder who screens and mention the family's anesthetic sensitivity to your vet. Keep the cat lean, maintain good dental care and provide plenty of water for urinary health.
